Toronto's Priority Neighbourhoods

Why do media stories about Jane and Finch tend to portray the neighbourhood as poor and full of crime?

A recent story on Toronto’s priority neighbourhoods said Black Creek, home to the intersection of Jane and Finch, is considered the least livable neighbourhood, under a new City of Toronto rating system.

Tysha Tomlinson and Sabrina Gajadhar find this greatly frustrating. Why can’t the rest of Toronto see that despite a challenging environment, many residents are thriving? Grassroots programs and community spirit are confronting the problems at Jane and Finch, head on.

Now they’re having their say.

Join us on Friday at noon for a live chat with these Westview Centennial Secondary School students about Jane and Finch, how the neighbourhood is portrayed in the media and a discussion of the resident-run movement that is challenging young people to meet their potential.

Joining us will also be Chris Penrose, executive director of the mentoring program Success Beyond Limits.
