{"id":48,"date":"2012-07-20T16:12:15","date_gmt":"2012-07-20T20:12:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.successbl.com\/wp\/?p=48"},"modified":"2012-07-20T16:12:15","modified_gmt":"2012-07-20T20:12:15","slug":"sbl-in-the-office-before-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/changeprohosting.com\/websites\/sbl\/2012\/07\/20\/sbl-in-the-office-before-game\/","title":{"rendered":"The Toronto Star: Jane-Finch summer program helps Grade 8 kids \u2014 and turns older youth into mentors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.changeprohosting.com\/websites\/sbl\/2012\/07\/20\/sbl-in-the-office-before-game\/54d0a21a4bc0a1e4409c7d42025c-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-766\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-766\" title=\"Deshawn Williams, 17, entering Grade 12 this fall at Westview Centennial Secondary, stands among younger students at Oakdale Park Middle School, some of whom he is now mentoring in a unique program called Success Beyond Limits.  \" src=\"http:\/\/www.changeprohosting.com\/websites\/sbl\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/54d0a21a4bc0a1e4409c7d42025c1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"376\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div data-assetuid=\"1229826\">\n<div>\n<p>Deshawn Williams didn\u2019t used to see himself as a leader, and he sure didn\u2019t want to work with kids.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But after he got into some trouble with firecrackers in Grade 8, his principal at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tdsb.on.ca\/schools\/index.asp?schno=3209\" target=\"_blank\">Oakdale Park Middle School<\/a>\u00a0suggested he try a local summer mentorship camp.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The free six-week program \u2014 3 Rs with fun on the side \u2014 gave him an early high school credit and a taste of what school might do for his future.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He liked it so much he started to volunteer and then became a mentor himself for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.changeprohosting.com\/websites\/sbl\/Success_Beyond_Limits\/Home.html\" target=\"_blank\">Success Beyond Limits,<\/a>\u00a0the non-profit mentoring group that has trained hundreds of Jane-Finch teens to be role models for kids in their community.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Most now head to post-secondary education and set an example for younger students.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While having a mentor is helpful, it seems being one can also pay off.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a mentor was a major turnaround for my life; I now know I can be a leader and maybe change the way things are done,\u201d said Deshawn, now 17 and entering Grade 12 this fall at<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tdsb.on.ca\/schools\/index.asp?schno=3448\" target=\"_blank\">Westview Centennial Secondary School.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s even strengthened my relationship with my little sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He plans to become a child and youth worker for the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.torontocas.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Children\u2019s Aid Society.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Deshawn is one of 24 Westview students in Grade 11 and 12 working as mentors this summer for the free Grade 9 prep program, whereby 100 Grade 8 graduates from Oakdale Park and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tdsb.on.ca\/schools\/index.asp?schno=3180\" target=\"_blank\">Brookview Middle School<\/a>\u00a0are bussed to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/web\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">York University<\/a>\u00a0for a head start on high school English and math from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tdsb.on.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Toronto District School Board\u00a0<\/a>teachers in the morning. That\u2019s followed by field trips and leadership programs with mentors in the afternoon. Students who struggle academically are given priority, and they earn a high school credit in General Learning Strategies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But the mentors get something out of it, too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went in scared; I didn\u2019t know a young man from Jane-Finch could be a mentor \u2014 I presumed I\u2019d need a mentor,\u201d recalled Nana Tieku, 21, who went from almost blowing his bid for the mentoring job \u2014 \u201cMy interview sucked; my speech was horrible\u201d \u2014 to being hired on for three years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He only quit to become vice-chair of the board.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a mentor helped me face my fear of public speaking, and even working with at-risk youth.
