{"id":1162,"date":"2013-06-27T11:49:13","date_gmt":"2013-06-27T15:49:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.successbl.com\/?p=1162"},"modified":"2013-06-27T11:49:13","modified_gmt":"2013-06-27T15:49:13","slug":"an-sbl-mentors-educational-journey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/changeprohosting.com\/websites\/sbl\/2013\/06\/27\/an-sbl-mentors-educational-journey\/","title":{"rendered":"An SBL Mentor&#8217;s Educational Journey"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.changeprohosting.com\/websites\/sbl\/2013\/06\/27\/an-sbl-mentors-educational-journey\/matthew\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1163\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1163\" title=\"Matthew\" src=\"http:\/\/www.changeprohosting.com\/websites\/sbl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Matthew.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"545\" height=\"365\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source: The Toronto Star<\/p>\n<p>MATTHEW ALAY, GRADUATE<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He made it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The struggling\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/life\/2012\/09\/06\/teenager_determined_to_graduate_high_school.html\">Grade 12 student, who entered his last year of high school at Westview Centennial Secondary School last September<\/a>, has graduated with honours \u2014 for the first time in his life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Even though he only needed two credits to finish his high school education, it was never going to be a slam dunk.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The year got off to a bad start as the 18-year-old, long known for his easily triggered temper, got in a fight with another student at school \u2014 a momentary return into his old ways that could have forever jeopardized his dream of graduating from high school.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He faced charges, but those were later dropped.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alay was upset that he\u2019d lost control considering the stakes were so high.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But with the support of the mentoring program Success Beyond Limits,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/life\/2012\/12\/28\/where_are_they_now_grade_12_student_stays_with_the_program.html\">Alay kept going<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>SBL\u2019s Chris Penrose was devastated that Alay had risked his dream of a high school diploma. But he wasn\u2019t about to bail on the student who was so close to his goal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told him we\u2019re not giving up on you as a person. We\u2019re not giving up on your potential,\u201d recalls Penrose.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alay\u2019s graduation this month, \u201cis the fruit of that determination,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s stronger now, says Penrose.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has taken a leadership role at SBL. We gave him the space to fail. He had to make that mistake and learn from it. He\u2019s learned just how much it takes to succeed when you\u2019ve got everything stacked against you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alay says his relapse into violence and the subsequent brief expulsion provided him with the opportunity to, \u201cthink about what I want, not what someone else wants of me. I had to finally get rid of the negative thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alay says he\u2019s excited to embark on his career as a general carpenter, building forms for concrete work. It\u2019s a job he believes will hold his interest and earn him a living, he says. \u201cI want to work and support myself,\u201d says Alay.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe I\u2019m going to have a good life.
